Undoubtely the most important town of the region is Tarragona , capital of the province of the same name , which has being one of the most precious cities during the Roman Empire. Additionally ,Tarragona , because of its strategic position, today is Spain's second most important port city.
Still visible are remnants of its imperial days under the rule of Augustus in the ruins of a great amphitheatre and other Roman buildings in the gardens above El Mirade beach. The traveler is given the option to walk along the ancient walls but also visit the amphitheatre or even explore underneath the Roman ciscus.
The beginning of the 20th century was a time of considerable economic prosperity in both industry and agriculture which brought about a cultural renaissance. The growing urban bourgeoisie built many fine houses in the fashionable architectural style of the day - "modernism" or avant-garde. Other buildings, most notably cooperative wine cellars, were also designed by the modernist architects. |
